Bat Flight Generates Complex Aerodynamic Tracks
Posted on May 11, 2007 at 11:14:04 pm
Bats generate a measurably distinct aerodynamic footprint to achieve lift and maneuverability, quite unlike birds and contrary to many of the assumptions that aerodynamicists have used to model animal flight.
New '1/f Noise' Discovery Promises to Improve Semiconductor-based Sensors
Posted on May 11, 2007 at 11:27:41 pm
More sensitive sensors and detectors based on semiconductor electronics could result from new findings by researchers from the United States, Norway and Russia.
Bridges Will Rock -- Safely -- With New Quake Design
Posted on May 11, 2007 at 11:33:58 pm
Bridges that "dance" during earthquakes could be the safest and least expensive to build, retrofit and repair, according to earthquake engineers at the University at Buffalo and MCEER.
Rover Spirit Finds Evidence of Pyroclastic Activity on Mars
Posted on May 11, 2007 at 11:37:45 pm
A plateau on Mars known as Home Plate was likely the site of explosive volcanic activity, say scientists. And data collected by the rover Spirit also offers further evidence that water was once present at or beneath the planet's surface.
'Smart' Sunglasses and Goggles Let Users Adjust Shade and Color
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 12:05:32 am
Imagine a single pair of glasses with lenses that can be transparent or dark, and in shades of yellow, green or purple, all on command. A new lens with chameleon powers promises to dramatically improve sunglasses' function.
Banner ads work -- even if you don't notice them at all
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 12:18:44 am
The majority of advertising exposure occurs when the audience’s attention is focused elsewhere, such as while flipping through a magazine or browsing a web site. However, a new study reveals that even this incidental exposure to advertising may have a pos
La Brea Tar Pits Reveal Hundreds of New Bacteria Species
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 11:30:29 am
Trapped in soil that was mixed with heavy oil nearly 28,000 years ago, the bacteria are uniquely adapted to the pits’ oil and natural asphalt, and contain three previously undiscovered classes of enzymes that can naturally break down petroleum products.
Two Ancient "Burps" Produced Massive Amounts of Carbon Dioxide at End of Last Ice Age
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 11:38:50 am
A University of Colorado at Boulder-led research team tracing the origin of a large carbon dioxide increase in Earth's atmosphere at the end of the last ice age has detected two ancient "burps" that originated from the deepest parts of the oceans.
Radical Engine Redesign Would Reduce Pollution, Oil Consumption
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 12:50:01 pm
Researchers have created the first computational model to track engine performance from one combustion cycle to the next for a new type of engine that could dramatically reduce oil consumption and the emission of global-warming pollutants.
Nearby Star Is A Galactic Fossil
Posted on May 12, 2007 at 06:47:34 pm
How old are the oldest stars? Using ESO's VLT, astronomers recently measured the age of a star located in our Galaxy. The star, a real fossil, is found to be 13.2 billion years old, not very far from the 13.7 billion years age of the Universe.
