GBL description :

GBL is a hygroscopic colorless liquid with a weak characteristic odor which is soluble in water. GBL is a common solvent and reagent in chemistry as well as being used as a flavouring, as a cleaning solvent, as a superglue remover, and as a solvent in some wet aluminium electrolytic capacitors. In humans it acts as a prodrug for GHB, and it is used as a recreational intoxicant with effects similar to alcohol. :)

GBL is a lactone. It is hydrolyzed under basic conditions, for example in a sodium hydroxide solution into sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate, the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid. Under acidic conditions it forms an equilibrium mixture of both compounds. These compounds then may go on to form a polymer. When treated with a non-nucleophilic base, like lithium diisopropylamide, GBL can become an alpha-carbon nucleophile. The related compound caprolactone can be used to make a polyester in this manner.

GBL is rapidly converted into GHB by paraoxonase (lactonase) enzymes, found in the blood. Animals which lack these enzymes exhibit no effect from GBL. GBL is more lipophilic (fat soluble) than GHB, and so is absorbed faster and has higher bioavailability. Because of these pharmacokinetic differences, GBL tends to be more potent and faster-acting than GHB, but has a shorter duration; whereas the related compound 1,4-butanediol (1,4-B) tends to be slightly less potent, slower to take effect but longer-acting than GHB.

GBL Application:

Gamma-butyrolactone is a highly soluble, non-toxic, safe and easy to use high boiling point solvent, used in petroleum processing as butadiene, aromatic, advanced grease extractor; used in the chemical fiber industry Acrylonitrile fiber spinning solvent, wool, nylon, acrylonitrile and other fiber dyeing auxiliaries. In organic synthesis, GBL is also widely used, it is the synthesis of α-pyrrolidone, N-methyl pyrrolidone, vinyl pyrrolidone, acetyl-γ-butyrolactone, cyclopropylamine and other raw materials, synthetic insecticides, weeding Agents, drug brain rehabilitation, ciprofloxacin, vitamin B1, chlorophyll and other intermediates. Also used in the synthesis of chlorophenoxy butyric acid herbicides, plant growth regulators.

Gamma-butyrolactone process studies :

1. Maleic anhydride hydrogenation method The process is the development of the 1970s advanced technology, with a hydrogenation reaction, in any proportion of production of tetrahydrofuran and γ-butyrolactone, the usual ratio is tetrachlorofuran: γ-butyrolactone = 3-4: 1. At present, maleic anhydride has been obtained by hydrogenation of succinic anhydride, and then further hydrogenation dehydration products.

The ramification of GBL:

1. Can be hydrolyzed to produce γ-hydroxy butyric acid, can be used as a special plasticizer plastic, pharmaceutical intermediates;
2. Can be oxidized to produce succinic acid; reduced to 4-hydroxy butyraldehyde, and then reduced to 1,4-butanediol;

4. Can react with CH3NH2 to form N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone;
5. Can generate tetrahydrofuran;
6. Can react with SO3 to form butyrolactone-α-sulfonic acid;

7. Can react with NaCN to form 2-piperidone;

8. Can react with CO to produce glutaric acid;
9. Can react with NaOH to produce 4,4 - oxo succinic acid;

10. Can react with Na2S to form thiolated succinic acid;

With NA2SO3 reaction to generate sodium γ-sulfobutyrate.
