Missing 500-Years of Loggias, Porticos Described
Posted on January 14, 2010 at 09:03:20 am
Using texts and images, a University of Arkansas researcher has for the first time reconstructed the time when the use of porticos -- roof-covered structures supported by columns -- gave way to loggias, or recessed porticos.
Bering Strait Influenced Ice Age Climate Patterns Worldwide
Posted on January 11, 2010 at 09:42:39 am
In a vivid example of how a small geographic feature can have far-reaching impacts on climate, new research shows that water levels in the Bering Strait helped drive global climate patterns during ice age episodes dating back more than 100,000 years.
The Past Matters to Plants
Posted on December 26, 2009 at 02:58:25 pm
It's commonly known that plants interact with each other on an everyday basis: they shade each other out or take up nutrients from the soil before neighboring plants can get them. Now, researchers have learned that plants also respond to the past.
Sun and Moon Trigger Deep Tremors on San Andreas Fault
Posted on December 25, 2009 at 06:47:46 pm
The faint tug of the sun and moon on the San Andreas Fault stimulates tremors deep underground, suggesting that the rock 15 miles below is lubricated with highly pressurized water that allows the rock to slip with little effort.
Wild Chimps Have Near Human Understanding of Fire
Posted on December 23, 2009 at 08:11:40 pm
A new study shows that savanna chimpanzees in Senegal have a near human understanding of wildfires and change their behavior in anticipation of the fire's movement.
Secrets of Mysterious 'Night-Shining' Clouds Unlocked
Posted on December 17, 2009 at 09:15:31 am
NASA's Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite has captured five complete polar seasons of noctilucent (NLC) or "night-shining" clouds with an unprecedented horizontal resolution of 3 miles by 3 miles.
From Greenhouse to Icehouse
Posted on December 16, 2009 at 09:02:07 am
The analysis of microfossils found in ocean sediment cores is illuminating the environmental conditions that prevailed at high latitudes during a critical period of Earth history.
More Evidence of Great Quake Danger to Seattle
Posted on December 16, 2009 at 08:52:41 am
For most of a decade, scientists have documented unfelt and slow-moving seismic events, called episodic tremor and slip, showing up in regular cycles under the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state and Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
Yellowstone Runs Much Deeper Than Thought
Posted on December 15, 2009 at 08:44:59 am
The most detailed seismic images yet published of the plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano shows a plume of hot and molten rock rising at an angle from the northwest at a depth of at least 410 miles,
Greenhouse Gas Carbon Dioxide Ramps Up Aspen Growth
Posted on December 06, 2009 at 12:41:55 pm
The rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide may be fueling more than climate change. It could also be making some trees grow like crazy.
